Coach Joe Martinez is one of the familiar faces who has helped shape BVB International Academy El Paso since day one. With 19 years of coaching experience, he’s built a strong reputation across the El Paso soccer community, with stops at El Paso Storm, Miners FC, Sparta FC, El Paso Locomotive, and now BVB. 

Since joining the club in 2022, Coach Joe has worked with a variety of age groups, including the 2009s, 2008s, 2012s, and now the 2017 Black team, while also contributing to the BVB School of Excellence. No matter the age group, his approach stays the same in creating a positive, competitive environment where players can grow and genuinely enjoy the game.

For Coach Joe, its not just about winning; its about helping players build skills, confidence, and respect for the sport. That mindset is exactly what makes him such a great fit at BVB.

As Director of Soccer Operations, Nancy Mankamyer puts it: “Coach Joe’s approach to the game is directly in line with the BVB Dortmund philosophy, not about the scoreline, but the desired result, which is the development and progress of players. His overall demeanor is positive, empathetic, and driven. We are fortunate to have Coach Joe on our staff here at BVBIA El Paso.”

Here's a fun fact about Coach Joe: he always carries a small figurine of Lionel Messi in his pocket during training and games. The players don’t know it, but for him, it’s a reminder of what passion, competitiveness, and love for the game really look like. We are grateful to have him at BVBIA El Paso and thankful for the positive impact he brings to our players and families.

We're excited to spotlight Coach Marisela Flores, one of our dedicated coaches, making a tremendous impact here at BVB International Academy El Paso.

Marisela grew up in Southern California and later spent time in Colorado before moving to El Paso. Soccer has been part of her life from a young age. She played for NHB and Stampede early on, continued at Ayala High School, and later took the pitch at Mt. San Antonio College. The game eventually led her into officiating. She worked competitive matches in events such as the US Open Cup, Dallas Cup, and Youth Regionals. Time spent on the field in many roles gave her patience, perspective, and a strong understanding of the game.

Today, she coaches our girls teams and leads sessions with the Mini Bees. She earned her Grassroots Coaching License and is currently working toward her D License. She continues to learn and grow so she can better serve her players while sharing her knowledge.

At home, Marisela is raising four children. That part of her life shapes how she leads, her teams; patient, supportive, and strong. We are grateful to have her at BVBIA El Paso and thankful for the positive impact she brings to our players and families.

A few weeks ago, BVBIA El Paso wrapped up an incredible Food Drive, collecting 277 pounds of food from our teams! Our BVB 15-Black Team won the pizza party for their efforts, and a huge thank you to Peter Jordan from the Salvation Army for their supporting our initiative. When combined with the Acts of Kindness neighborhood food drive,  our club raised an amazing 1,441 pounds of food – a true testament to the BVBIA spirit.

Now, we're keeping the momentum going with our current Toy Drive! Let's come together to bring joy to local children this season.

We're excited to spotlight Coach Fernando Hernandez, one of our dedicated coaches making a huge impact here at BVB International Academy El Paso. Coach Fernando brings energy, leadership, and a strong passion for player development to everything he does. Currently, he plays a notable role supporting multiple areas in our academy:

  • BEEs Program – Helping introduce our youngest players to the game through fun, fundamentals, and positive coaching

  • BVB 17-Black Team – Assisting Head Coach Joe Martinez with training, player development, and game preparations for our 2017-born players.


Safety is a top priority, and Coach Fernando is CPR/AED Certified through the American Red Cross, giving families added confidence that their children's well-being is always in capable hands. As a kinesiology student with a hands-on learning approach, Coach Fernando combines his growing knowledge of the human body with real on-field experience to help players improve safely and effectively. His proactive attitude makes him a valuable asset to the BVB Family.

We're proud to have Coach Fernando on our staff and are grateful for the positive influence he continues to have on our players every day!

EL PASO, Texas - The City of El Paso hosted a Neighborhood Cleanup in District 1 that took place during the morning hours of October 4th, last month. Players and Staff from BVB International Academy El Paso participated in this cleanup, collaborating with the Enchanted Hills Neighborhood Association to help clean neighborhood trails.

Following the event, District 1 expressed appreciation to BVBIA El Paso for their contribution. In a letter of gratitude, the City highlighted the group's commitment to community service, nothing:

"Your team's energy, teamwork, and positive spirit made a tremendous difference in helping us beautify our community and bring neighbors together. Your willingness to lend a hand demonstrates a wonderful commitment to community service and sets an excellent example for others to follow."

The city looks forward to partnering with BVBIA in future events and thanked the organization for its support and dedication.

EL PASO, Texas - Open Play for BVB International Academy El Paso kicked off in style at El Paso High School, welcoming an incredible mix of 33 players on November 2nd and 35 players on November 9th. From energetic newcomers to seasoned teen players, the field buzzed with excitement as everyone jumped into fast-paced 3v3 and 4v4 games that put creativity, teamwork, and fun front & center.

"The grand kickoff of the 2025 Open Play saw 33 players, from young ones to seasoned teens, dive into a chill and mega-fun soccer extravaganza! Coaches hobnobbed with recruits, crafting pint-sized matches. These sessions are all about letting imaginations run wild, forging friendships, and team bonding without a hint of stress. Huge high-fives to Coach Jason and Coach Doug for being in attendance to lead the beautiful game of soccer! We're buzzing with excitement for the next two weeks of footie fun!" Director of Soccer Operations Nancy Mankamyer stated.

Our Open Play format focused on small-sided games that were quick, high-energy matchups where players get more touches on the ball, analyze faster decisions, and stay constantly involved within the action. Without the pressure or rigid structure, players are free to experiment with their skills and connect with others working as a trio or quartet. 

Coaches Jason and Doug, who are also from the Leadership of BVB International Academy North America, were in the midst of it, always bringing energy, encouragement, and their passion these last two sessions. Their guidance created an environment that felt both laid-back and inspiring, reminding everyone why soccer is known as the "beautiful game."

These sessions aren't just about scoring goals; they lead to into building confidence, friendships, and creativity while bringing the community together. It's a chance for players to express themselves while simply enjoying the game they love.

The energy from the first two sessions was immaculate for what's shaping to be a fantastic month of soccer. With one more session left, everyone ages 7-15 is more than welcome to sign up for our final session!

It’s the season of gratitude—and we’re thrilled to kick off our Team Food Drive Challenge, a fun and meaningful way to give back to our El Paso community!


November 15–20

Teams will compete to collect the most non-perishable food items, with all donations going to the Salvation Army of El Paso to support families in need right here in El Paso.

HOW IT WORKS


Each team will have a designated collection bin:

  • Families can drop off items Saturday, November 15 at the hospitality tent (Westside, 10am–2pm) or during training sessions at El Paso HS:
    Monday–Thursday, 5:30–7:30pm
We’ll tally donations and share team standings throughout the week.
The team with the highest total weight wins a PIZZA PARTY—plus bragging rights for the season!

CASH COUNTS TOO

We’re also accepting cash donations—and they go a long way.
For every $1 donated, the food bank can provide 10 pounds of food to families in need.
Cash donations can be dropped off at the tent and will count toward your team’s total weight.
